Version 1.3

A new version of the app has been submitted to Apple. This includes an update of the interface to be iOS 7 compliant, and one new feature… you can now limit the pointing ability of a boat.  This feature is part of the polar settings, next to the speed scaling option.  My boat has older sails and doesn’t point quite as high as the generic polar says it should, this new adjustment...

Version 1.2

This release has just been posted to Apple. The largest new feature is the inclusion of support for iPolar, but most of the changes involve cleanup of the node/waypoint information page, re-organizing and renaming fields in order to help clarify some of the information. Also by request is the inclusion of a page reset button as well as more wind information, AWA,AWD, etc.  This version includes...

TWS Error in Version 1.1 and Earlier

FYI for users of 1.1 and earlier, while reviewing the tacking math for version 1.2 I came across an error in TWS calculation when current is involved.  This error results in sub-optimal tacks under low wind and high current conditions. The maximum error is hard to quantify as it depends on wind heading vs. current set and propagates through the polar table, but in my testing I’ve been...

iPolar Support

I recently came across an iPad/iPhone app called iPolar which produces polars for cruising boats given a basic set of information.  I haven’t had a chance to go over the polars in detail, but from what I’ve seen the data looks pretty good. iPolar will export to third-party apps, so I’m currently adding iPolar import to Tack Pad.  I’m also in the  process of doing a...

Here’s the list: Pages are now saved and restored between sessions Renamed VMG to TVMG to avoid confusion between the two values Update the documentation to better describe TVMG Added SailTimer Inc...

SailTimer License

I recently discovered that Tack Pad uses tacking algorithms patented by Sail Timer Inc.  After discussing things over with SailTimer, I’m pleased to announce that Rudder Nut LLC and Sail Timer Inc. have come to an agreement. Rudder Nut is now an official licensee.  Sail Timer has a similar product to Tack Pad, at least in that it solves tacking problems, but their real-time focus,...
